A Quick Weekend New Orleans Itinerary: Wicked, Food & Fun

Traveling with friends is becoming a theme. Even if you can only squeeze in a night, I think it’s worth it. For this trip we planned a packed New Orleans weekend itinerary. A friend of mine (who is much better at keeping up with events than I) saw that Wicked was going to be in New Orleans in December and suggested that we take a destination date.. I agreed. It was a Friday night showing so we headed out of town before lunch to make the most of the day. It’s worth noting that none of this post was sponsored and all opinions are my own.
At lunchtime we were at Ponchatoula, so we made a stop at Tula Burger Co. Solid choice. Justin has stopped here before and suggested we make it our lunch place. He wasn’t wrong. The smash burger. The bun. The fries. Excellent. This is the cutest town, and I feel like I need to explore it more. That is for another time though.
We made our way on to New Orleans from there. Since our ultimate destination was Saenger Theater and the show was late, we decided the closer we could get to the theater the better. We decided on The Saint. It’s a Marriott Boutique hotel right on Canal Street and not even a block from the theater. This decision proved smart as it was POURING rain after the show. The theme here is interesting. Saints mixed with the seven deadly sins. The room had a full mirrored wall behind the bed and the hallways felt a bit like a brothel. With that said, it was quiet and the location was perfect.

For supper we headed down to the Palace Café. We had reservations for 6:15 pm, and I would suggest making them if you decided to eat here. The restaurant was empty when we arrived, but was completely full before we left. We had the suggested crab cheesecake for appetizer, I managed a seafood pasta for my entree, and Justin and I finished off with the bread pudding. Delicious. Unfortunately, at the publishing of this article, the Palace Cafe is “permanently closed;" I hate that for you.

We made our way down to the Saenger Theater and were there quite early. Fortunately, the doors were open. Should you find yourself in this situation know that there are no seats in the waiting areas of the theatre. Concessions are available – lots of concession stands, but no seating. We made our way downstairs where there were fewer people and a short wall that made a great place to wait for a bit. There was also a concession stand conveniently nearby. We made our way to the seats with just enough time to get settled before the show began.
If you’ve never seen Wicked, you probably should. Especially if you enjoy Broadway. I’ve seen it twice: once in NYC and now in New Orleans. It’s just fantastic. The music. The story. Take my advice and do it.
The next morning, we headed out to find brunch. On our way we walked through The Roosevelt just to see the lights and made our way to Two Chicks Café. We timed our arrival just right and only had to wait about 10 minutes before we got a table. When we left, there was a line out the door. The food was excellent and iced coffee was included in free refills. WHAT?! So yum. There are several locations in the New Orleans area so choose the location closest to you.
After a walk through the The Roosevelt and then down to the Riverwalk Outlets it was time to head home. It was a quick trip packed with good food and good company.
