Putting Down Roots on a Farm: An Introduction (Part 1)

Before Farm. Fashion. Family. here’s where it all began — my lifelong love for animals and the journey that shaped Where Fashion Meets Life. From childhood dreams of veterinary medicine to advanced degrees in Animal Science and Biomechanics, horses and farm life have always been part of my story. Today I’m raising my family on a Mississippi hobby farm filled with horses, goats, chickens, and plenty of everyday adventures rooted in both science and heart.

Last year took us places I never could have planned on my own. ✈️🤍

Some trips were loud and fast and full of adrenaline. Some were slow, quiet, and exactly what our souls needed. Some were just Justin and me, chasing connection. Some were all of us, making core memories with the kids in tow.

Eighteen a + destinations later, what stands out most isn’t the miles or the map pins — it’s the togetherness. The conversations. The reminders that rest, wonder, and shared experiences matter just as much as the work we put in back home.

Travel looks glamorous on a highlight reel, but for us it’s always been about perspective. Stepping outside routine. Coming back a little fuller. A little more grateful.

I’m grateful for the gifts we can hold, but even more for the Hope we can’t see but feel deep in our bones. For family gathered close, for memories we’re still making, for the laughter and the tears, and for grace that keeps meeting us right where we are.

If today is loud and full — soak it in. If today is quiet and tender — let peace settle over you.
Whatever this year has held, Christ is the constant who never stops coming close.

Fun fact: chickens are tiny, feathered cannibals… and honestly? They’re thriving.

Yep — our girls got the Christmas turkey carcass, and let me tell you… they went to town. Chickens are omnivores, which means they’ll happily snack on things you’d never expect.
Think:
• Meat scraps (yes, really)
• Leftover bones
• Yogurt
• Scrambled eggs (I KNOW 🙈)
• Bugs, lizards, mice — basically anything that doesn’t outrun them

And the bonus? The extra protein is GREAT for them, especially during molting season or colder weather when laying can slow down. A little boost goes a long way in keeping those eggs coming and feathers shiny.

This year, we decided to do things a little differently.

Instead of Justin and me doing all the decision making, we handed some of the responsibility to the kids.
.
They were allocated a set amount and given a challenge:
-The ministry had to be local
-They had to be doing GREAT work—not just “good” work
-And they had to research, prepare a presentation, and make the case for why our family should support them. What they came back with was thoughtful, wise, and honestly humbling. Here are the ministries they chose:

✨ @madcaapms : Madison Countians Allied Against Poverty has been serving families for over 35 years. They provide food, education, emergency assistance, and support to break cycles of poverty right here at home. A quiet ministry doing deeply impactful work.

✨ @baptistchildrensvillage : A Christ-centered organization providing safe homes, counseling, and support for children and families in crisis. They focus on restoration, healing, and building strong futures with love and dignity.

✨ @quiet_waters_ms : A ministry committed to serving people living with disability. Their goal? To provide respite, restoration, and gospel-centered support for individuals and families who often bear heavy burdens.
.

• What were they developed for?
Nigerian Dwarfs were originally bred for high-butterfat milk, while Pygmy goats were developed as compact, hardy farm companions (and accidental professional troublemakers).
• Life span:
With good care, both breeds can live 12–15 years — long enough to perfect their “I refuse to come when called” routine.
• Favorite foods:
Goat truth: they don’t actually eat everything.
Their real love language is hay, leaves, weeds, and anything you didn’t offer them.
• Special considerations:
Small goats still need secure fencing, regular hoof trims, minerals, and parasite management… plus humans with a high tolerance for shenanigans.

Some stories take years to write… and some take a whole childhood.

Jayden recently entered a poem about her horse, Hope, in the ASPC Giddy Up and Rhyme Poetry Contest… and she won. 🥹✨
.
If you know their story, you know this wasn’t just a poem. It was a love letter written by a girl who grew up alongside a legend.
.
Hope is a 22-year-old Miniature Horse who has earned more national titles than we could list in a single post — a true show-ring extraordinaire. My family brought her home when she was just 2… and Jayden has never known life without her.
.
She started showing Hope at age four.
And somewhere between tiny leadline classes and championship laps, they created a bond that’s as deep as it is rare. Hope will sometimes respond to Jayden before she’ll even do it for Mom. (And honestly? We don’t blame her. 😉)
.
Watching them grow up together — one becoming a horsewoman and the other gracefully stepping into her golden years — has been one of the sweetest privileges of our farm life.
.
And now, Jayden has honored that journey with words that captured exactly who Hope is to her.
I couldn’t be prouder of either of them.
