A Quick Weekend New Orleans Itinerary: Wicked, Food & Fun

A last-minute idea turned into the perfect quick escape — a destination date to New Orleans to see Wicked with friends. From smash burgers in Ponchatoula to a boutique stay on Canal Street, a delicious dinner, and a magical night at the Saenger Theatre, this overnight trip proved you don’t need a long vacation to make meaningful memories. Good food, great company, Broadway magic, and just enough adventure to make us want to plan the next getaway.

A long weekend, a few miles on the road, and a whole lot of memories made. ❤️🌎

We packed up the kids and headed north for a little family adventure—and checked a pretty big item off my bucket list along the way.

First stop: Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada. 🇨🇦

We stayed at the Marriott on the Falls, and the view from our room was absolutely incredible. We spent time exploring the falls from behind, took the Niagara City Cruise, wandered through the beautiful countryside, and made our way over to charming Niagara-on-the-Lake.

Niagara Falls has been on my “I really want to see this someday” list for as long as I can remember, and standing there with my family was one of those moments that makes you stop and appreciate just how amazing this life is.

Then… we loaded back into the car and headed to Cleveland, Ohio! 🚗

We caught a Guardians game against the Kansas City Royals, spent some time beachcombing along Lake Erie, and wandered around downtown taking in the history, architecture, and monuments.

Two places. Two very different experiences. One very full weekend. 😂

And somewhere between the miles, the sightseeing, the ball game, the laughs, and the occasional “Are we there yet?”… I found myself feeling incredibly grateful.

Grateful that we get to show our kids the world.

Grateful that we get to experience new places together.

And grateful that I get to knock a few of those lifelong bucket-list items off the list—with my favorite people beside me.

Life is busy. The kids are growing way too fast. And you just have to say YES to the trip. ❤️

Lyric is my constant shadow, my personal security detail, and—if my children ever ask—my favorite child. 😂

I literally cannot move around this house, yard, barn, or anywhere else without her appearing approximately 0.7 seconds later. Where I go, Lyric goes. What I do, Lyric supervises. If I sit down, she is immediately convinced that whatever space I have left belongs to her.

Dobermans have a reputation for being intense and intimidating, and honestly… we prefer to let people believe that. 😏

Because the truth is, this particular Doberman is a giant baby who just happens to look like she could collect a debt for you.

A little bittersweet, but mostly just really, really proud. ❤️🐴

We spent today at the MQHA show, and it was exactly what we needed—a fun, low-key, no-glitz kind of horse show. The kids had a blast, got to do what they love, and we got to enjoy a beautiful day with our horse-show family. And honestly, with this heat, the timing of a simple show was just about perfect! ☀️😂

A huge thank you to the MQHA, Tom McBeath, and Tribute Feeds for putting together such a great day. We appreciate all the work that goes into making these shows happen!

But today came with a pretty big moment for Jordyn.

She sold her sweet pony, Smooth. ❤️

Smooth is headed off to teach some new kids, and I can’t think of a better job for her. She’s patient, calm, steady, and has that special ability to make a kid feel confident and safe. She has been such an important part of Jordyn’s journey, and now she’s going to get to do the same thing for someone else.

So while saying goodbye is definitely bittersweet, there’s also something really special about knowing you’re sending a good pony on to her next chapter.

Today was a pretty perfect way to round out the Smooth & Jordyn duo—with one last show, lots of good memories, and the knowledge that Smooth’s best work may still be ahead of her.

Thank you, Smooth, for being exactly the pony Jordyn needed. We’ll be cheering you on in your next adventure. ❤️🐴

And now… on to the next chapter. ✨

Well. We’ve been bamboozled. 🐔😂

Back in May, we welcomed a shipment of lovely young pullets to the farm. Sweet little girls. Future egg layers. Just what we ordered.

Except…

In June, we started noticing that one of these “girls” seemed to be a little… different.

And by “different,” I mean SHE’S A HE.

The verdict is officially in. The feathers, the behavior, the general attitude—our little pullet has been exposed. 😂

Honestly, with the number of chickens that have passed through this farm, it was bound to happen eventually. Apparently, the Chicken Distribution Department needed to keep us humble.

The good news? @meyer_hatchery has a form specifically for this exact situation, so we will submit the necessary paperwork and they’ll taking care of it without any fuss.

So now we wait and see what happens with our surprise gentleman.

In the meantime, I need to know…

And then there was Cabi Fashion Week. ✨

Justin and I rolled straight from our little destination date into Anaheim, California, for Cabi Fashion Week—and what an incredible few days it was!

There was SO much packed into those days: education, fashion, the new fall collection, a denim try-on of all the new denim dropping this season, styling tips, behind-the-scenes looks at the design process, and business updates that have me excited about what’s ahead.

But if I’m being completely honest, the clothes are only part of why I love this.

My favorite part of Cabi is the women.

I got to spend time with my Cabi sisters—women who inspire me, challenge me, teach me, encourage me, and have become so much more than business connections. We’re building businesses together, but we’re also building friendships and relationships that go far beyond a closet full of really great clothes.

And that’s something I didn’t necessarily expect when I started this journey.

So here I am, coming home from a week filled with horses, adventure, marriage, fashion, education, and some pretty incredible women… feeling very grateful for all of it. ❤️

Last week, while the kids were off showing ponies, Justin and I took advantage of the opportunity to have an adventure of our own.

We started with @randysdonuts - a MUST STOP- and ended the day with absolutely amazing food at @dintaifungusa (so good we ate it twice!) in Downtown Disney, then made our way to beautiful Temecula Valley.

We explored the Temecula Valley, had dinner at @southcoastwineryresort , woke up the next morning to one of the most unforgettable experiences we’ve ever shared—a hot air balloon ride over the valley with @californiadreaminballoon . 🎈And THEN took a ride through Old Town Temecula, enjoyed an incredible meal at @swinginncafe , and grabbed coffee at @thepressespresso bar.

There is something pretty special about experiencing new things together. Marriage can get caught up in the everyday—kids, work, schedules, animals, chores, and approximately 47 things that need to be done before dinner. 😂

So I’m grateful for the seasons when we get to hit pause, get out of our normal routine, and remember that we’re not just partners in the chaos… we’re partners in the adventure, too.

It was exactly what we needed before heading into the main reason we were in California: Cabi Fashion Week, where I got to learn, grow, and be inspired.

And honestly? I’m pretty sure the kids had a pretty good week, too. 😉

While the kids were off at ASPC Congress last week, my parents to held down the fort… and, they did a pretty stellar job. 😂🐴

The kids had an absolutely fantastic show experience, with some BIG wins and plenty of moments that made this mama pretty darn proud. Watching them grow in confidence, horsemanship, and partnership with these ponies is one of my favorite parts of this whole crazy adventure.

And, of course, none of it happens without an army behind them.

A HUGE thank you to my parents for being there with the kids every step of the way, and to our incredible Cygent Farm family for supplying horses, support, encouragement, and all the behind-the-scenes magic that makes these show weeks possible. ❤️

If you’re going to survive a Southern summer, take notes from Daisy. 🐷☀️

Fresh bath? ✔️
Shady spot? ✔️
Fan blowing full blast? ✔️
Zero responsibilities? ✔️

Our sweet old lady is living her best life… at least until she has to get up.

Daisy is definitely in her golden years, and lately she’s been struggling with joint pain and stiffness. We’ve started her on the same joint supplement our horses take, along with a joint supplement made for dogs, and we’re hoping to help keep her comfortable for as long as possible.

She still loves her snacks, her naps, and supervising everything that happens around the farm. We just want to make sure she’s enjoying life as much as she can.

So I’m calling on my fellow pig people…

Have any of you cared for a senior pot-bellied pig with arthritis or joint issues? What made the biggest difference? Supplements? Bedding? Exercises? Something we haven’t thought of?

We’re always looking for ways to make our old girl a little more comfortable.

Back in April, @dr.shroyer & I had the opportunity to do something that changed us forever.

For years, we’ve sponsored a precious girl through the @mightyacorns . We’ve watched her grow from a seven-year-old little girl into an incredible young woman through letters, prayers, and updates. This spring, we finally got to meet her in person.

There really aren’t words to describe what it felt like to hug someone who has been part of our hearts for so long.

During our time in Kenya 🇰🇪, we visited the children’s home where she lives, spent time with the other children, laughed together, worshipped together, and experienced the incredible joy that comes from building relationships that span oceans.

We also had the privilege of serving in the Kipsongo slum, delivering food to families and spending time with the people who call it home. While there, we were reminded that sometimes the greatest gift we can offer isn’t what we bring—it’s simply being present.

Of course, we couldn’t leave Kenya without falling in love with its breathtaking countryside, beautiful livestock, and amazing wildlife. Every part of the journey left us in awe of God’s creativity and His people.

The impact this trip had on our family is hard to put into words… but one thing became very clear: we weren’t meant to go just once.

We’ve already booked our flights to return next April.

If you’ve ever felt God nudging you to step outside your comfort zone, serve in a different way, or build relationships that truly change lives—maybe this is your invitation.

Sometimes the biggest blessing isn’t in what you give. It’s in what God gives back to you through the people you meet.

@dr.shroyer has learned that when I say, “I have an idea…” it usually means another project is headed his way. 😅

This time, it was a bird bath for the little chaos garden outside my kitchen window. I had a vision of a peaceful corner where I could enjoy the birds, the flowers, and the soothing sound of moving water while tackling the never-ending to-do list inside.

This time, it was a bird bath for the little chaos garden outside my kitchen window. I had a vision of a peaceful corner where I could enjoy the birds, the flowers, and the soothing sound of moving water while tackling the never-ending to-do list inside.

Today is my birthday. 🎂

I celebrated the occasion exactly as anyone turning 29 would…

By getting up before dawn, driving 7 hours to Perry, Georgia, unloading horses, hauling tack, setting up stalls, and spending the rest of the day preparing for a horse show.

Nothing says “birthday girl” quite like sweating in a barn aisle while calculating how many times you’ve forgotten something back at the trailer.

The next few days will be a whirlwind of horses, show clothes, early mornings, and enough walking to justify every piece of cake I plan to eat.

Then, if all goes according to plan, next week you’ll find me parked beside the pool recovering from a couple of weeks of go-go-go.

Because self-care is important when you’re 29.

Again.

For the very, very first time.

And I intend to celebrate this 29th birthday exactly the same way I celebrated the last several. 🤣

A while back (Nov 2024), I shared about the surprisingly beneficial relationship between crows and chickens. Since crows aren’t exactly fans of hawks, they often sound the alarm and help encourage predators to move along.

At the time, I jokingly said I wanted to make friends with the local murder of crows.

Well… mission accomplished.

I now have a regular crew of crow friends who visit the farm. When I put food in the feeder, I step outside and call, “Come on, crow friends!” like some sort of woodland princess with a tractor payment.

A little while later, they show up to inspect my offering, hold what I assume is a committee meeting, and then proceed to clean out the feeder.

Am I being judged by a group of highly intelligent birds? Absolutely.

Do I still get ridiculously excited every time they show up? Also absolutely.

The crow feeder is officially open for business, and my neighborhood murder seems pleased with the service. 🖤🐦

Pretty sure the crows have me trained at this point. They show up, stare at me until the feeder is refilled, and then leave a glowing review with the rest of the murder.

Happy Father’s Day to the guy who spent his weekend exactly where you’d expect to find him—at a horse show. ❤️

There aren’t any pictures of @dr.shroyer because he was too busy tossing saddles, hauling gear, picking up poop, and generally supporting our very expensive hobby. While the kids were collecting placings, he was behind the scenes making sure all the heavy lifting was done.

A special Father’s Day thank you to him and to all the horse show dads who work tirelessly without much recognition.

We also want to give a huge shout-out to H.O.P.E. for hosting an incredible show and for welcoming our little spotted ponies. We had a fantastic weekend!

Some highlights: • Jordyn & Smooth earned the Open Youth High Point on Saturday. • Jaxson & Crash got their own spotlight in the Senior Western Pleasure class. • Jayden & Cherry absolutely nailed their Western Pleasure class.

Yep — our girls got the Christmas turkey carcass, and let me tell you… they went to town. Chickens are omnivores, which means they’ll happily snack on things you’d never expect.

• Bugs, lizards, mice — basically anything that doesn’t outrun them
